There is no single Instagram algorithm. In its own explainer, Instagram Ranking Explained, Instagram says it doesn't have a singular algorithm that decides what people see. It uses different ranking systems for different parts of the app: Feed, Stories, Explore and Reels. Each system predicts how likely you are to interact with a piece of content and ranks it accordingly. Here is what Instagram has said about how each surface works, and what that means for brands.
Feed: Mostly People You Follow
Feed shows a mix of posts from accounts you follow and recommended posts from accounts you don't. According to Instagram, the most important signals are:
- Your activity: which posts you have liked, shared, saved or commented on.
- Information about the post: how popular it is and when it was posted.
- Information about the person who posted: such as how often people interact with that account.
- Your history with that account: for example, whether you comment on each other's posts.
Instagram says Feed predicts how likely you are to spend a few seconds on a post, comment on it, like it, reshare it or tap the profile photo.
Stories: Closeness Matters Most
Stories come from accounts you follow. Instagram ranks them using your viewing history, engagement history (such as likes and direct messages) and how close you are to the author. It predicts whether you will tap into a story, reply to it or skip ahead.
Explore: Discovery Driven by Popularity
Explore recommends posts from accounts you don't follow, based on what you have liked, saved, shared and commented on before. Popularity carries more weight here than in Feed or Stories. The key predicted actions are likes, saves and shares.
Reels: Entertainment and Watch Time
Reels mostly come from accounts you don't follow. Instagram says it surveys people about whether a reel was worth their time, and it ranks reels on your activity, your history with the creator, the reel's content and audio, and the creator's popularity. The most important predictions are whether you will reshare, watch to the end, like or visit the audio page.
Instagram also says some content is less likely to be recommended in Reels, including low-resolution or watermarked videos, muted reels, reels with borders, reels that are mostly text, and content reposted from elsewhere.
The Three Signals Instagram Highlights
In early 2025, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said the three signals that matter most for ranking are watch time, likes and sends (shares by direct message), as reported by Social Media Today. He added that likes matter slightly more for people who already follow you, while sends matter slightly more for reaching people who don't. He suggested creators watch three numbers in their insights: average watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach.
Users Can Now Shape Their Own Recommendations
In December 2025, Instagram introduced Your Algorithm, starting in the US on Reels. It shows people the topics Instagram thinks they are interested in and lets them ask for more or less of a topic. For brands, this is a reminder that being clearly about something helps: content with a clear topic is easier for both the system and the viewer to place.
Shadowbans and Recommendation Eligibility
Instagram says its Recommendation Guidelines decide what can be suggested to people who don't follow you, across Explore, Reels, Search and suggested posts. Accounts that repeatedly break the rules can lose eligibility for recommendations for a period of time. You can check this under Account Status in the app and appeal decisions you think are wrong.
How Brands Can Work With Instagram Ranking
- Make content people want to send. Useful tips, relatable moments and things worth showing a friend reach new audiences through sends.
- Earn watch time. Hook viewers in the first seconds, keep reels tight and give people a reason to watch to the end.
- Be original. Post your own content in high quality, without other apps' watermarks.
- Build relationships with followers. Reply to comments and messages; Stories and Feed reward closeness.
- Stay clearly on topic. A consistent subject helps Instagram recommend you to the right people.
- Use your insights. Track watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach, and post when your audience is active.
Instagram Is One Part of Being Found
Social platforms are only one place people discover brands. Buyers also ask AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews for recommendations, and those answers draw on your website and what others say about you.
